All students at Menzies Creek Primary School participate in a 50-minute Performing Arts lesson each week.

Through the Kodaly music method, all students learn music notation and characteristics of music such as tempo, dynamics, timbre, pitch and mood. Movement to music, dance and drama, including puppetry, also form part of these lessons.

Students in the upper school also learn about different types of music such as music from other cultures and how different musical instruments produce sound.

Choir

All students who are interested in singing have the opportunity to join either the junior (grades p – 2) or senior (grades 3 – 6) choir. The choirs sing a range of songs from different musical styles occasionally incorporating individual soloists. Both choirs regularly perform at school assemblies and are currently rehearsing for a performance at Emerald Glades Nursing Home.

Hillsong

The senior choir performed this year in the Hillsong Concert with 14 other schools in the area at the George Wood Performing Arts Centre in Ringwood.

Recorder

Students from grades 2 and above have the opportunity to learn the recorder in small groups on a weekly basis. These groups also perform regularly at school assemblies.

Band

Menzies Creek Primary School also has a school band that brings all instruments which students learn together. Those who do not learn an instrument are welcome to play tuned percussion such as glockenspiels and xylophones.

Instrumental Music Program

The school has an extensive instrumental music program where students are given individual lessons during school time by visiting teachers. There is a cost involved in these lessons. Instruments currently being offered are guitar, piano and band instruments including percussion, woodwind and brass.

J Rock

We participated in the Junior Rock Eisteddfod for the first time in 2006.  It was a great opportunity for all students from Grades 2 – 6 to be involved in a dramatic dance production to a theme of choice.
